‘JUNGLE HARPIES & AFRICAN VISTAS’ ORIGINS.FOLKLORE.RITUAL.RITES.🔥 Also, celebrating 25 years! 🥂🎂

Two years on, I'm excited to share that me and my husband Seth Arcane have finally found the perfect venue here in Brighton, the iconic Regency Town House, to hold our joint art exhibition ‘JUNGLE HARPIES & AFRICAN VISTAS’. This October, we will open the doors to a very personal artistic journey, an exploration of where we come from, the rituals that shape us and the rites that mark moments of transformation throughout our lives.🔥

Drawing inspiration from ancient symbolism, folklore, nature, geometry and the raw beauty of the African landscape, the exhibition brings together a collection of original artworks created over recent years:

‘Jungle Harpies is inspired by the folklore around harpies as strong female characters and my love for bird’s delicate beauty. A tribute to family and the transitional nature of life, and to the importance of rite and celebration as we oscillate, sometimes perilously, its in between stages.’  Inma

'Inspired by growing up in South Africa these paintings depict abstract themes of creation and the earth through bold but intricate patterns and graphics, reminiscent of the art of Southern Africa, traditionally found on rondavels (a traditional conical dwelling with a grass thatched roof), pottery and fabrics.’ Seth

This time, as a fun twist, we are going to bring the ritual of tattooing, one that is close to both our hearts, into the art gallery and we’ll be performing tattooing live amongst the art. Humans have used marks, patterns and symbols to communicate identity, belonging, spirituality and transformation since time in memorial, and tattooing has been a part of the story for generations. A ritual through which something temporary becomes permanent and something personal becomes visible.

This is where the artwork moves beyond the canvas. We will be working with the concepts from the paintings, with each piece being created specifically for this project and never repeated after the exhibition. The tattoo becomes more than an image. It becomes an experience, created in the unique moment, witnessed by others and carried forward by the person who receives it. 💫

The exhibition will also hold a small retrospective into both our careers in tattooing, which together expand over 50 years! I myself am celebrating 25 years since arriving to England and getting introduced to tattooing in the summer of 2001. Tattooing also led me to meeting Seth later that same year so it feels significant to mark this milestone with a joint exhibition, so much so as the work on display was birthed at the same time as our daughter and developed over her first years of life. It’s been a wild ride but we’ve made it this far ✨
